Vans - Old Is Cool 2008: Swell Skate Park, Brazil

End of may, winter arrived strong this year, the “minuano” wind has started and the temperatures dropped. Winter in Brazil doesn't match, but here in the south, we get rain and low temperatures on a daily basis. Fortunately the sun was shining and the atmosphere was perfect, a brand new bowl, nice vibes, beautiful people, a bunch of ladies, and (can i say?) aged skateboarders tearing up the bowl apart. The Vans Old is Cool 2008 was the event to celebrate the opening of the new bowl and the 30 year old birthday party for Swell Skate Park.

Place packed and the competition running, lots of Pros making that coping block scream loud, perfect lines and attitude from Daniel Kim, Biano Bianchin, Mauricio Boff, Afonso Muggiatti and Oscar Mad. Allan Mesquita showing flawless runs with a combo of airs, grinds and inverts, mixing old and new style tricks. Johny Drews and Bigo (yeah Bigo, the man from Bigolandia!!!) showing how to get some AIR! Local skateboarder Tomate doing ten thousand different tricks, a crowd pleaser, miller flips, body varials, odd blunts and serious and complicated lip tricks. The Legends were riding at a high level also. Alvaro Fazio working on speed lines using both shallow and the deep part of the bowl, Zóio was in a blast making loud noises after each grind. ATTITUDE !!! Speed, grindtopia!! Other old pros like Come Rato, César Gyrão and Cesinha Chaves were pure vibes. Addicted skateboarders an a brand new perfect bowl with coping block... Do I say more? Competition? Oh yeah, I barely forgot. It was a competition ... but peolpe were on extasy [sic], the meeting of a generation and a new place to ride gave us a vibey weekend. Saturday was finished with a bunch of rock bands playing live aside of the bowl and a nervous skateboarding jam session running.

The Masters (30-34 years old) final was the first to ride on monday, Allan Mesquita showed all his experience with perfect lines and got first. The Grand Master (35-39 years old) finals got crowned Henrique Banana with super clean rides and a nice variety os tricks. The Legends (above 40 years old) were all winners due to the skateboarding and the attitude, but the real winner was Cacio Narina showing to all a high level of skateboarding.

This 30 year old party was massive, loads of facts to describe it but I’ll just say some words from the people who were there.

Paulinho Rude Boy described it perfectly: “Two days of extreme positivity, intense skateboarding from all ages and an event that will make history on Brazilian skateboarding. This is one of the best , if not the best place to ride in Brazil and the event was a blast, an international event.”

Swell Skateboard and partners would like to thank all the peoplle who were part of it but we have no words to thank them all. A special thanks to Vans and all the skateboarders who worked to make the NEW.LOVE bowl a reality.

Thank you very much skateboarding.
